Fire Department Emergency Medical Services

The Southampton Fire Department provides emergency ambulance service for the community with the two different levels of service listed below:

  • An Emergency Medical Technician, EMT Basic, is someone who is trained in basic life-saving techniques. These include, but are not limited to, CPR, rescue breathing, oxygen therapy, childbirth, and cervical and fracture immobilization. Currently, 11 members are certified as EMT-Basic.
     

  • The EMT Paramedic is the highest trained level of pre-hospital provider in Massachusetts. The EMT-P is skilled in all basic skills as well as the advanced airway and intravenous therapy. They are also trained to the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) level. This includes the treatment of cardiac related chest pain / myocardial infarctions, congestive heart failure, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and COPD. Included in most trainings are Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) designed especially for the smaller patient, and also a course in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS). Currently, 28 members are certified as EMT-Paramedic.
