Project Stay Cool

The Town received a grant from the MA. Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program (MVP) and is exploring ways to improve heat safety for all.

Southampton wants to help people stay safe during very hot weather and days with poor air quality. Our summers are getting hotter, and heat waves are becoming more common. This can be especially dangerous for older adults, people with medical conditions or disabilities, and people who take medications that make it harder to handle heat. Many Southampton residents age 60+ live alone, have health needs, or may not have air conditioning. We are asking older adults and caregivers to share their experiences and concerns about hot weather, cooling options, and staying safe during extreme heat.

Extreme heat and poor air quality also affect children and youth athletes in different ways than adults. Children regulate body temperature less effectively, making them especially vulnerable to heat-related illness during outdoor play, including school recess, sports practices and games.

We are asking teachers, coaches and parents their experiences with heat-related illness risks to students and outdoor athletes, to protect young people during hot weather.

General Responsibilities and Duties

The Committee's function is to research grant opportunities for Southampton from federal, state, foundation and other sources, and work with the town’s department heads, committees, boards and commissions to determine needs and match them with grant possibilities. The Committee also assists in making sure that deadlines and pre-requisite information for grant applications are met. Once a grant is awarded, we support town officials, namely the Town Administrator in charge of contracting/procurement, and the Town Accountant for reporting back to the awarding agency.
